Introduction:
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) is a higher education institution under Muhammadiyah association founded on 24 October, 1981 as a transformation from IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Primarily, UMS was a Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (Surakarta branch) which was established in 1958. During that time, the study programs offered were only General Education, General Economics, and Islamic Education offered in Bachelor Degree. Once the building permit was obtained in 1965, FKIP Muhammadiyah (Surakarta branch) split into two universities namely Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (IKIP) Muhammadiyah Surakarta and Institut Agama Islam Muhammadiyah (IAIM) Surakarta. Two years later, precisely in 1967, IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta added another study program: Civil Law. Furthermore, at the same time, IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta acquired a permission to hold as the parent of Muhammadiyah Higher Education across Central Java consisting of IKIP Muhammadiyah Klaten, Magelang, Kudus, Purwokerto, Kebumen, Wates, Temanggung, Wonogiri, Sukoharjo, Karanganyar, Banjarnegara, Prambanan, Purbalingga, Wonosari, and Sragen. Throughout their development, these branch universities eventually stood on their feet. In 1979, Drs. H. Mohamad Djazman, The Rector of IKIP Muhammadiyah at that time, commenced the establishment of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta by integrating IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta and IAIM Surakarta. Therefore, two years later, IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta proceeded to change its name to Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS). UMS, at that time, managed some faculties including Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI). Afterwards, along with the demands and the needs of times, UMS will continually provide excellent study programs across all degrees: Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral.
