About Google Internship in STEP Japan 2024:

The Student Training in Engineering Program (STEP) is a development program commit to addressing issues surrounding diversity in our company and in the technology industry, and as such students, who are a member of a group that is historically underrepresent in the technology industry, will receive priority in the selection process. This group includes women, ethnic , and students with disabilities. Bachelor’s students currently majoring or intending to major in computer science or related technical fields are encourage to apply.

As Google aspires to be an organization that reflects the globally diverse audience that our search engine and tools serve, STEP is intends to be an educational program designed to counteract some of the structural inequality of opportunity around existing computer science and technical education. Google invest in providing development opportunities to all students wishing to become future computer scientists and software developers, and we feel this focused program is an important part of making the broader goal of greater equality of opportunity a reality.

STEP is divided into two parts: development course and internship. After your application submission, we will reach out to confirm if you are interested in participating or still considering our optional course.

Development Course (Optional)

The first part of the Google Internship program is aimed at developing students’ technical and soft skills. We will hold a total of 8 classes, with the goal of providing students knowledge that will support them in their future studies and career. Please note, those who cannot participate in the development course can still apply to the STEP internship.

• Start Date: 10th May 2024
• Course Duration: 8 classes held once a week, every Friday, 5pm (3 hours long).
• Location: Google Shibuya office
• Language: Class will be mainly in Japanese

STEP Internship:

The second half of the Google Internship program will be a paid internship, in which successful applicants will be assign to a core software project. You will work with a team of Googlers and will be mentor by a Google engineer to guide you through your internship. Intern projects will be determine based on the experience, skills, and interests of each student.

• Start Date: August 2023 onwards.
• Internship Duration: 10 – 17 weeks (length and start date may vary depending on project scope and student’s availability).
• Location: Google Shibuya Office.

Responsibilities During Internship:

• Apply knowledge gained in computer science courses to real-world problems.
• Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution to effectively solve problems.
• Develop scripts to automate routine tasks.
• Create and support a productive and innovative team. Work with peers, managers, and teams.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for Google Internship in STEP , you have to fulfill the below criteria:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• Experience with data structures or algorithms.
• Experience programming in one of the following language: C, C++, Java, and/or Python.
• Ability to complete an internship program of 10-17 weeks.
• Graduating between March 2027 and March 2029.
